Odoo 20 launched on 24 September 2026, at the opening keynote of Odoo Experience 2026 in Brussels. Odoo sums the release up as automating any process, designing a website from a prompt and having an accounting expert on call around the clock. Behind that summary, the release notes run app by app, and some entries change how familiar apps work.

This guide picks out the Odoo 20 new features that matter to UAE companies, grouped by the work they change, and ends with what to check before you upgrade. Everything comes from Odoo's official Odoo 20 release notes, and we flag where a feature already existed in Odoo 19.

AI Agents That Act inside Your Processes

Odoo 19 brought AI agents into chats and records. Odoo 20 puts them inside your processes: agents can be summoned by automated and scheduled actions, create records, including from an uploaded file of instructions such as a PDF, and update existing records.

  • Agentic automation: agents run from automation rules and scheduled actions, and automation chats show how an agent handled each case, so you can ask for changes based on the errors it met.
  • Files in conversations: upload files, link documents and ask questions about a file while previewing it.
  • MCP connection: connect your database to other tools through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open protocol that lets AI assistants work with outside systems.
  • Voice and buttons: dictate requests to an agent, and answer its questions or permission requests with a click.
  • Automatic model selection: choose an AI provider and Odoo picks the best model for each task.
  • Clearer feedback: agents show live updates on what they are doing, ask for confirmation when they reach their tool call limit, and keep conversations for up to 30 days after the last message.

"Topics", the sets of instructions and tools that define how an agent behaves in a given context, are now called skills. One change affects every budget: all AI features now need credits, bought through IAP, Odoo's in-app purchase service.

Where to start: pick repetitive, rules-based work, such as turning uploaded PDFs into new records, and keep a person reviewing what the agent creates until you trust the results. When no judgment is needed, a plain automated action is still the cheaper tool.

Accounting: Fewer Manual Steps, Tighter Controls

  • Bill line prediction: when you enter or import a bill, Odoo suggests the product, account, tax and analytic distribution from your bill history and the line label.
  • Bank consistency: every journal entry that affects a bank account must now come from a bank transaction, which prevents mismatches from manual entries.
  • Reconciliation: a bank reconciliation summary report, a button to rerun automatic reconciliation, matching rules with a payment tolerance, and easier splitting of one transaction across several accounts. Our guide to bank reconciliation in Odoo covers the daily routine.
  • Clearer payment statuses: "In Process" becomes "Paid" and "Paid" becomes "Reconciled", and the payment wizard detects pending payments to stop you paying twice.
  • Customer invoice reminders that can run automatically from the Accounting settings.
  • Tax included or excluded: switch prices between the two on sales orders, purchase orders and invoices.

The structure of the books changes too. Parent accounts replace account groups, and account codes become optional. Asset models are replaced by depreciation models, with asset settings moved onto the asset accounts themselves. Approved expenses now create draft bills in the expense journal, replacing the separate "Employee Expenses" menu.

UAE Localization: A New Chart of Accounts and Payroll Reports

Accounting

The UAE chart of accounts has been redesigned to comply with IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) and the UAE Commercial Companies Law. It uses a scalable 6-digit numbering system with reverse-liquidity sequencing, which lists the least liquid items first, and includes statutory equity reserves, technical accounts such as work in progress and goods in transit, and parent accounts.

Expense accounts have been reworked and now carry descriptions. Ready-made depreciation models, which Odoo's UAE notes still call asset models, have also been added to make onboarding easier. The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) VAT audit file, generated from the general ledger, remains available, as it is on Odoo 19.

Payroll

UAE payroll is part of the Payroll app in Odoo Enterprise. In Odoo 20 it gains:

  • An End-of-Service Benefit report that computes the total end-of-service liability for one or more employees at any point in time.
  • A new "Emiratization Compliance" report that tracks Emiratization percentages in line with the regulations of the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE).
  • Employee benefit contributions revised to align with the General Pension and Social Security Authority (GPSSA) and the Abu Dhabi Pension Fund (ADPF).
  • DIFC Employee Workplace Savings (DEWS) contributions treated in line with Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) regulations.
  • Non-salary employer costs, such as insurance, work permits and visa processing fees, for a clearer view of labor cost.
  • Improved overtime calculations, a plane-ticket benefit calculation and a calendar-day working schedule.

Sick leave now runs through a single salary rule and a single leave type. The WPS export improvements and the better annual leave and end-of-service provisions already arrived in Odoo 19, so they are not new in this release.

Website, eCommerce and Marketing

The AI Website Assistant can now create new pages when you ask, edit snippets, build or change web forms, rework menus and even replicate a page from a URL you provide. Blocks that AI generated or changed are marked in the editor, which makes them easy to find when someone reviews the page.

Search visibility gets attention too. Structured data is added to pages by default for Google rich results, images use adaptive sizing for faster mobile pages, sitemaps include only indexable pages, and you can create an llms.txt file to help large language models understand your content. A WhatsApp widget lets visitors start a conversation in one click.

In eCommerce, the AI assistant can generate product images or change a product's name, price or description from the shop page. Abandoned carts can be followed up on WhatsApp, customers can return products from the portal and pick a preferred delivery date, and products can unpublish and republish themselves as stock changes. Marketing Automation adds AI-assisted campaign set-up and a drag-and-drop workflow builder.

Operations, HR and Everyday Work

  • Planning: the Field Service app has been discontinued and its features now live in Planning, with a live technician map, automatic planning by customer location and travel fees.
  • Helpdesk: AI detects similar tickets and suggests answers, and customers get a reminder before a ticket closes automatically.
  • Documents: AI can rename uploaded files, and one request can ask for several files at once. Our guide to Odoo Documents and approvals shows how the app fits finance and HR work.
  • Inventory: reordering rules suggest minimum and maximum levels from demand history, a stock aging report is available, and the return wizard gives way to a simpler returns process.
  • Attendances: eSSL and Mantra biometric devices connect directly, and kiosks with a camera can take a photo at check-in.
  • Everywhere: an offline mode for creating and editing records, CC recipients on emails sent from Odoo, and Sign support for Arabic and other non-Latin alphabets.

What to Check before Upgrading to Odoo 20

Some changes remove or merge features you may rely on. Test each of these on an upgraded copy of your database, following the method in our Odoo 19 upgrade checklist, which applies to Odoo 20 as well.

  • Payroll: work entries and the Planning-Payroll integration are removed, and work entry types merge with time off types, so run a full pay run on the copy.
  • Field Service users: jobs, worksheets and reports move into Planning, and worksheet templates now use property fields instead of Studio fields.
  • Accounting: check reports, filters and automations that use payment statuses, account groups or asset models, and stop posting manual entries to bank accounts.
  • Taxes: a default tax outside the invoice's fiscal position is now removed, even without a replacement, so create test invoices for each fiscal position you use and check the taxes they carry.
  • Access rights: record rules give way to a domain on each access right, so review custom user groups against your access rights design.
  • Custom modules: developers should check icons, as Font Awesome is replaced by Material Symbols, and any code that relied on mail tracking values.
  • AI budget: estimate the IAP credits your chosen use cases will consume.

Should You Upgrade to Odoo 20 Now?

Odoo publishes one major version a year and gives each one three years of standard support, so a new release is an opportunity, not a deadline. Under Odoo's current plan, Odoo 19 stays in standard support until September 2028, while standard support for Odoo 17 ends this month.

Move now if you are starting a new implementation, want AI agents in daily work, or run UAE payroll on Enterprise and need the new reports. Plan for later if third-party modules have no Odoo 20 version yet, heavy customization needs porting, or VAT filing, year-end or an audit is coming up. Our Odoo 20 page sets out the upgrade routes for Enterprise and Community.

How Star Bit Solutions Can Help

Through OdooStar, we implement Odoo 20 and upgrade existing databases on a tested path. For Odoo Enterprise, Odoo's upgrade service migrates the standard data while our engineers port custom modules, test Studio changes and reports, compare the redesigned UAE chart of accounts with yours, check the payroll set-up and train your teams. Community databases follow a migration project, with the option to move to Enterprise.

When we upgrade a client to Odoo 20, we port the SBS modules and other customizations they use as part of the project. Our overview of free Odoo 19 Community modules explains what each one adds. To find out what Odoo 20 changes for you, send us your version, edition and module list.
